James Douglas,. 1837-1918. American metallurgist and mining engineer, born in Quebec. Co-inventor of Hunt-Douglas process for copper extraction for Phelps, Dodge Co. examined copper ore deposits in Arizona during 1881; established mines at Bisbee; helped organize Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co. (1885), president (1908-18); built El Paso and Southwestern Railroad (from 1887). The town of Douglas, Ariz., is named for him. His grandson Lewis Williams Douglas (1894-1974), born in Bisbee was member of U.S. House of Representatives (1927-33); U.S. director of the budget (1933-34); deputy administrator, war shipping board (1942-44); U.S. ambassador to Great Britain (1947-50).

The post office and library would be to your left in both photos. The Douglas
house is shown in the left as it appeared in 1910. The house was within
easy walking distance of all mining operations. The building in the right photo
now holds law offices and Catholic Social Services. The building behind the
Douglas house is the Gym Club. It still stands. You can see a small portion
of the Gym Club roof in the right hand photo. You can also see the top of
Central School which rests to the right and behind the Gym Club.

As a further note; When the Douglas' built their new house in Warren the property
was donated to the YWCA for a new building to house young ladies. The 'Y' still Stands behind the red brick building.

Before the Building was a law office it was one of the Phelps Dodge hospitals.
(I was born in that building).

Answers:

1. The restaurant was located under a large tree. It was established by a Portuguese cater and his Mexican wife, in the year 1880. I BELIEVE IT WAS NEAR THE POST OFFICE.

2. There were several bars, saloons, and brewers located near the mouth of the gulch in 1880. The first local school was established in the area in 1881. The name came from A.B.Seiber's saloon where he brewed, cooled, and aged beer in a large cellar 'hogged' within the hillside. "

3. The city was officially name Bisbee in August of 1880. It was named after Judge DeWitt Bisbee of San Francisco. They say he never came to visit his namesake The cities original name was Mule Gulch.

4. On January 9, 1902 the city charter was approved. The first elected officials were Joseph Muirhead mayor, I.W.Wallace secretary, Dayton Graham town marshall, and J.M. O'Connell city attorney.
